Supt. Carvalho inspires student-run breakfast hosted by XFINITY and HBO

Just before students celebrated graduation XFINITY Communities and HBO hosted the Aventura Marketing Council’s annual student-run breakfast meeting featuring inspirational keynote speaker Supt. Alberto Carvalho, Miami- Dade County Public Schools, National and Florida Superintendent of the Year. The event highlighted school/business partnerships supported by the AMC – recipient of the Dade Partner of Excellence award four times and inducted into the Dade Partners Hall of Fame for four consecutive years.

Hundreds of business, community and education leaders gathered at Turnberry Isle Miami were impressed by the “best and brightest” students who expertly ran the meeting representing the AMC’s Dade Partner schools: Mia Biton, Aventura City of Excellence School;  David Berg, Ojus Elementary School; Justin Warnack,  Aventura Waterways K-8 Center; Shea Berman, David Lawrence Jr. K-8 Center; Chloe Bontoux, Norman S. Edelcup Sunny Isles Beach K-8 Center; Daniel Guberek, Dr. Michael M. Krop Sr. High; Minerve Jean, North Miami Beach Sr. High; Valentina Alvarez, Alonzo and Tracy Mourning Sr. High; and Ian Raynshteyn,  Hochberg Preparatory School.

Special appreciation was expressed to meeting hosts; members of the AMC’s Education Committee chaired by Charlene Welker of Mount Sinai Medical Center; educators, school board members and all those supporting student success – a goal shared by Carvalho, providing brilliant leadership for MDCPS – the nation’s fourth-largest school system.

“We must teach kids how to think, manage ideas and collaboratively work in teams within our diverse community with compassion and understanding,” Carvalho said. “We also have to teach them that the world is bigger than their zip code. A global economy is the new reality. We should be just as concerned about foreign lands as with what’s happening in our neighborhoods.”

Addressing the prospect of tougher assessment standards and opportunity gaps, Carvalho emphasized, “Kids are resilient and if you put a challenge in front of them, they know how to overcome it - but it will take a little bit of time.

“When they get to one of our schools, ‘magic’ happens in the classroom, where a beautiful transformation can occur because of inspired teachers treating a child as an individual with a god given ability to soar and excel. It is that personal connection that changes lives. That is why I believe public education is fundamental to democracy

“Support kids, invest in your schools, treat someone else’s child as your own. Help elevate them to let them see the horizon that stretches out far beyond what they often see from where they stand. If we all commit to doing that, tomorrow becomes a better day.”

Clicking over to XFINITY Communities outreach initiatives, Florida Vice President Rafael Visbal explained the “Internet Essentials” program supports education and gives families with a child eligible to participate in the National School Lunch Program the opportunity to receive $9.95 per month home Internet service and purchase a computer for a nominal price. Excitement was also activated by the XFINITY X1 Entertainment Operating System, empowering TV and the Internet with advanced search, personalized recommendations, apps and the fastest in-home Wi-Fi for all rooms and devices. On-the-go AMC professionals also applauded HBO-GO, offering unlimited access to HBO programming available on favorite devices including iPads, iPhones, Android phones and tablets, Kindle Fire and XBOX 360.
