Just before students happily exclaimed, “School’s out for summer!” The Dental Care Group, Aventura Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics; The Rotary Club of Hallandale Beach-Aventura; and Aventura Town Plaza co-hosted the Aventura Marketing Council’s annual Student- run Breakfast Meeting. The event, highlighting the benefits of school/business partnerships, featured special guest speaker Alberto Carvalho, Superintendent of Miami-Dade County Public Schools.
Hundreds of business, community and education leaders gathered at the Newport Beachside Hotel & Resort were impressed by “best and brightest” students who expertly ran the meeting representing the AMC’s eleven Dade Partner schools: David Gonzalez, Aventura City of Excellence Schools; Valerie Val, Ojus Elementary; Sylvia Bobo, Aventura Waterways K-8; Madison Bequer, David Lawrence Jr. K-8 Center; Bianca Perigo, Greynolds Park Elementary; Paulina Older, Highland Oaks Middle; Federico Psevoznik, Hochberg Preparatory School; Ciera Charles-Pierre, Krop Sr. High; Crystal Simeon-Delhomme, North Miami Beach Sr. High; and Paula Torres, Alonzo and Tracy Mourning Sr. High. Ava Grossman from Norman S. Edelcup Sunny Isles Beach K-8 was sidelined by a case of the stomach flu.
Special appreciation was expressed to meeting hosts; members of the AMC’s Education Committee chaired by Maira Diaz-Giusti of Coconut Grove Bank; educators, school board members and all those supporting student success – a goal shared by Supt. Carvalho, leading the nation’s fourth-largest school system.
“At the root of every solution for our nation’s economy and job creation is the viability of our public educational system,” Carvalho said. “Over the past three and half years, we’ve reduced our budget by a staggering $2 billion without firing a single teacher for economic reasons - nor have we done away with arts and music programs.
“We can elevate the dignity of our community by elevating our most precious commodity- our kids - so they can see tomorrow stretches far beyond the street corners where they live today.”
