“How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world”

An overflow crowd of enthusiastic businessleaders and residents recently filled every corner of Mo’s Bagels to hear Miami-Dade County School Superintendent Alberto Carvalho and School Board Member Dr. Martin Karp share their vision for ACTIVE, a volunteer program.

ACTIVE, Active Citizens Teaching Individuals Valuable Expertise, offers people the opportunity to participate in various programs and projects with students.   Two volunteers, former Aventura Commissioner Arthur Berger and Ruth Karp, spoke about the tremendous satisfaction they receive for opening the students’ minds to new ideas.

“There is tremendous talent and experience in this community,” said  Dr. Karp, “and now the District is focusing our efforts on attracting the participation of  individuals who have the potential to become some of our most valuable assets.”

Supt. Carvalho shared some of the school district’s successes with the audience, including the recognition this year that Miami-Dade County Public Schools had achieved its highest graduation rate in history, and had also been recognized nationally for academic performance on the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) with the Council of Great City Schools’ top financial award as well as a Broad Prize finalist for the fourth time.

“Participate actively....share your wisdom and experience with students who are eager to learn...you can improve this world!” said Supt. Carvalho.

The meeting was co-sponsored by Stern Bloom Media and Airstron.  Maxine Lopez, president of Airstron, a full-service air-conditioning supply and service company, noted, “It was our great pleasure to help sponsor this outstanding event and support the efforts of our school system.”  Michael Stern, Aventura Commissioner and partner in Stern Bloom Media added, “Stern Bloom Media is always proud to align our name with Superintendent Carvalho and Dr. Karp!”
